0–2 Getting started

Level 0: AI Unexposed
Never meaningfully used generative AI.
Level 1: AI Tourist
Occasional questions and experimentation.
Level 2: AI User
Regular prompting for useful work.

3–5 Working with AI

Level 3: AI Operator
Uses prompting, context, iteration and multiple tools effectively.
Level 4: AI Power User
Creates repeatable workflows and sophisticated prompts.
Level 5: AI Workflow Builder
Combines models, files, projects, automation and structured processes.

6–8 Building with AI

Level 6: AI Systems Thinker
Understands models versus systems, RAG, agents, tools, evals and human-in-the-loop design.
Level 7: AI Builder
Can design and implement AI applications using APIs, models and orchestration.
Level 8: AI Engineer
Understands transformers, inference, embeddings, training, evaluation and production architecture.

9–10 Advancing AI

Level 9: AI Research-Level Practitioner
Can reason deeply about model behaviour, scaling, post-training, interpretability and research literature.
Level 10: Frontier AI Expert
Karpathy/Hinton/Sutskever-type territory: capable of reasoning about and contributing to the underlying science and engineering of frontier models.
